This exciting art exhibition kicked off Bear River’s 400th Anniversary Celebrations and showcased the various styles and medium that have developed and blossomed  in Bear River’s  art community over generations. Pieces included both traditional craft and modern works with the 400th Anniversary in mind.

For 16 days the Rebekah Gallery was home to a magnificent exhibition of art and fine craft by 40 area artists.

Our great thanks to the many talented artists, generous gallery sitters and others who worked together to makeArt Amongst the Vines such a success, not just for the 400th, but for the entire village. A special thanks to Jon Welch and Erin Schopfer for making their extraordinary gallery space available for this exhibition, Bear River Vineyards who graciously donated their award winning wines for the Grand Opening reception and to Susan Malmstrom for photo documenting the show.

Art Amongst the Vines was held in honour of the 400th anniversary of the planting of the first European grape vines on North American soil in 1611 as a gift exchange between the Mi’qmaq people of this ancient settlement and their French guests from Port Royal.

Art Amongst the Vines was curated by Jon Welch, Simone Wilson and Ken Flett.

“If the measure of success is the size of the crowd, Bear River’s Art Amongst the Vines was a major accomplishment in the tiny town that boasts of being the very spot that grapes were first planted in North America — 400 years ago”. By Lawrence Powell (Annapolis Spectator) Read it here.
