Life in Bear River

Located on a tidal river flowing from the Bay of Fundy, Bear River sits between Annapolis Royal (settled in 1604), and Digby ( famous for the highest tides in the world). Historically known as ‘The Village on Stilts’,  many of Bear River’s buildings were constructed on tall pilings rising out of the river bed in the early 1800’s because of its situation in a steep valley cut by a tidal river. These marvelous buildings add to its unique charm.

Bear River has become renowned for the high concentration of artists and  fine craftsmen that have chosen to make Bear River their home. Our shops, galleries, our many cottage wineries (the first vines were planted here in 1611), charming small B&Bs, the famous agricultural exhibition, wonderful local fare and seafaring history make Bear River a place like unlike any other.

The Bear River Mi’kmaq First Nations Community is located just outside the village and is a sourse of great pride. The Medicine Trail, Cultural Centre and Stone Bear Wilderness Adventure are sites not to be missed.

This place never ceaces to amaze.
